The design of Conrad Spa was inspired by the tranquility of Petra, Jordan and the dynamic divide in the canyon leading to the Treasury within Petra. This great divide coincided with the legal need to provide separate female and male spa facilities in the UAE. The “canyon” therefore provided a natural divide within the Spa layout, which is both dynamic and calming, with the reception playing host to both the spa and gym and the outdoor terrace, which combines a series of terraced outdoor relaxation seating, and an elevated, shaded Yoga Pavilion.
The concept was developed from there to include a 22m water channel which starts as a cascade down each side of the canyon, running down the textured glass on each side, obscuring vision between each side and what lies within, to a floor channel that leads guests to the treatment suites, with stepping stones to access each room. The lighting plays a significant role in creating the cerebral calm with soft curves of light in the reception giving way to more angular lights in the gym for more energy. A turquoise blue light the water channels creating reflections up the rippled stone textured walls that frame the reception desk, a large-scale stack of organic “hot stones” derived from one of the signature treatments.
